The woman behind BG Books, Janet Youse, has been with “The Palette & The Page” since its very beginning in November of 2009. Janet is from Elkton and with her love of reading has accumulated numerous books over time. It has been a dream of Janet’s to open a gently used book store in downtown Elkton.
There is a beautiful selection of gently used books at 50% to 70% off of the original cover price for adults and children at ‘The Palette & The Page.’ The book collection offered rotates constantly, so be sure to check back often, especially around the various holidays when Janet puts out books related to those special days!

Where is your favorite place to be ?
My home because I don't get to spend enough time there.
Patti Paulus, a founding member of ‘The Palette & The Page,’ was born in Dayton, Ohio and graduated from the University of Dayton. She has lived and studied art in various cities until she finally settled in Maryland in 1987. She currently resides in the Fair Hill region of Maryland.
Words and letters have always interested her and she took her first calligraphy class while studying at the University of Dayton. Since then, Ms. Paulus has studied lettering, drawing, painting and design with artists from all over the United States, England, Italy and Germany. Actively working as a lettering artist since 1982, she practices calligraphy as an art-form and uses hand-rendered letterforms in her graphic design work. She also paints, draws and her new found love of charcoal is opening up fresh avenues of expression for her.
Patti has taught and lectured on calligraphy in Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland. Her work has been exhibited in Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina and Ohio, and is in numerous private collections around the world. Hand-rendered lettering designs are on the walls of homes, schools and churches in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

If you could have one magic power, what would it be?
I would like to be able to bi-locate in a second. That way I wouldn’t miss being a part of so many really cool happenings! The additional advantage is that travel would be instant too! So I could be in, say, Los Angeles, California at my son Joshua’s concert with the Pacific Symphony and working out with my daughter K in Elkton. So I could be with both of my children at the same time at opposite ends of the country. Of course, there would be other great perks as well - two amazing fund raisers, two great trips…working on two different art projects at the same time.
Yes… we’ve started a blog! Our plan is to post at least every other week on Thursdays. Lauren Permenter Davidson, our fantastic intern, will be doing a lot of the posting. We are so grateful to Lauren for the enthusiasm she has for this project. Until now I (Patti!) have been holding her up :) I thought it would be good to share a bit of our history AND some of the new projects we are working on.
All the best,
(If you have thoughts, or ideas, things you’d like to know about, let us know! The next few blog posts will be about the owners - maybe you’ll learn something new???)
OUR HISTORY IN A NUTSHELL~
What started as a pop-up in November 2009 and continued as a sort of Co-Op in 2010, The Palette & The Page happily became an LLC in 2011. Lynn Whitt lead us on the LLC path and we haven’t looked back! We are a gallery that is owned by four very passionate women - Patti Paulus, Stacey Peterson, Lynn Whitt and Janet Youse. Janet and Patti have been with the Gallery since its inception in 2009. Lynn joined in early 2010 and Stacey joined as a represented artist in 2013 and became the fourth owner of the gallery in 2015 after Margie Blystone left her role at the Gallery.
Since our beginnings, we have been committed to expanding the Arts & Entertainment District in Downtown Elkton through our First Friday Opening Receptions in conjunction with the Downtown Elkton Art Loop. These evenings, from 5pm to 8pm, feature an Opening Reception for the new local visiting artists in our Special Exhibit Gallery in addition to the opportunity to enjoy talking to some of the artists and authors we represent, providing great local live music and refreshments. We pride ourselves in offering something new to our community each month. It has been a part of our mission since the very beginning. Installing a new show every month is a lot of work, but it brings so much opportunity to artist and customer alike for connection, learning and sharing.
We were thrilled to be awarded the Elkton Chamber & Alliance’s Small Business of the Year in 2014. The following year we were inducted into the Cecil County Business Hall of Fame.
For the past six years, we have had a Poetry/Creative Writing evening in conjunction with Cecil
